Majroskogen Nature Reserve: What applies now?
- Majroskogen has been a nature reserve since April 13, 2026. The reserve is approximately 58.6 hectares large and is located between Svedmyra, Tallkrogen, Gubbängen, Hökarängen, Stureby and Bandhagen. It is protected to preserve biodiversity and as an important recreational area. This means new rules for, among other things, lighting fires and dog walking. 1 2
What the city has decided
- Stockholm City Council established the Majroskogen Nature Reserve on April 13, 2026. The decision includes the purpose of the reserve, regulations, demarcation, and a management plan. 1
- The purpose of the nature reserve is to preserve biodiversity and to long-term protect a core area in the city's blue-green infrastructure. It shall also preserve, develop, and make accessible an urban natural area for outdoor life, nature experiences, public health, and education. 1 2 3
- The reserve comprises continuous coniferous forests, rocky slopes, and wetlands. 1 2
- The public may continue to use the area for strolling and exercise activities, play, berry and mushroom picking, and dog walking. However, dogs must be leashed outside designated dog exercise areas. 1
- Fires are only permitted in designated areas, and camping is prohibited. 1
- The management plan, which is not legally binding, describes measures to achieve the reserve's purpose and can be updated as needed. It contains 7 management areas divided into 28 sub-areas, of which approximately 62 percent of the forest is designated for free development with the possibility of targeted interventions. 1
- Two special regulation areas (FO) exist: FO1 (Oppundaparken) where more space is given for the development of services and facilities for play, recreation, and exercise, and FO2 where a new entrance to the reserve shall be constructed. 1
- The decision was made after the Exploitation Committee, the Environment and Health Protection Committee, and the City Planning Committee jointly proposed the establishment. 1 2
- The Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Liberals, Centre Party, and Christian Democrats reserved their position against the decision, in favor of their own proposals which, among other things, wanted to include the entire forest area in the reserve. 1 2
What remains uncertain
- Farsta District Council has proposed that the Traffic Committee grant investment funds to construct new entrances and areas in and adjacent to the Majroskogen nature reserve, with an estimated cost of approximately 10 million SEK. 1
- The project for entrances and areas has been proposed to start in 2029 and can thereafter be implemented in stages over a number of years. 1
Why is this happening?
The City Council already in budget 2023 commissioned an investigation into the formation of a nature reserve in Majroskogen, and the commission was revised in budget 2024 and 2025 with the goal that a decision would be made during 2025. According to budget 2026, the goal was for the City Council to make a decision by June 2026 at the latest. The work shall also take into account housing construction goals and planned infrastructure. 1 2
What happens next?
The Traffic Committee evaluates Farsta District Council's proposal for investments in Majroskogen's entrances and areas on behalf of the City Executive Board. According to Farsta District Council's administration, it is not possible to run all large park investment projects simultaneously. 1
